In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Limavady like this:

Limavady (or Newtown Limavady, or Rathbrady Beg), market town and township with ry. sta., Druma-chose par., in co. and 16 miles NE. of Londonderry, on river Roe, 572 ac., pop. 2954; P.O., T.O., 2 Banks. Market-days, Monday, Tuesday, and Friday. The place was called Limavady from an old castle of that name in the neighbourhood. The linen trade of the town has greatly declined. Limavady has one distillery.
