In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Killarney like this:
Killarney.-- town, par., and township, mid. co. Kerry, 185 miles SW. of Dublin by rail - par., 34,789 ac., pop. 9656; township, 1569 ac., pop. 6651; 2 Banks. Market-day, Saturday. The town is situated 1½ mile E. of the Lower Lake of Killarney, and is dependent chiefly on the great number of tourists who annually resort to this beautiful district. The mfr. of fancy articles, chiefly from the wood of the arbutus tree, is to some extent an industry. The demesne of the Earl of Kenmare is in the immediate vicinity.
