In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Inishowen like this:

Inishowen, East and West, 2 baronies, NE. co. Donegal - East Inishowen, 123,371 ac., pop. 27,124; West Inishowen, 76,848 ac., pop. 13,357; comprise the peninsula between Lough Foyle and Lough Swilly; Inishowen Head is on W. side of the entrance to Lough Foyle; Inishowen Lighthouses, on Dunagree Point, Inishowen Head, are 49 and 74 ft. high, with 2 fixed lights (Inishowen) 67 and 92 ft. above high water and seen 13 and 15 miles.
