In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Adare like this:
Adare, par. and market town with ry. sta., mid. co. Limerick, on the river Maig, 11 miles SSW. of Limerick and 140 miles SW. of Dublin -- par., 11,938 ac., pop. 1997; town, pop. 561; P.O., T.O. In the dist. are remains of three abbeys. Adare Manor is a seat of the Earl of Dunraven.
