In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Tulla like this:
Tulla.-- market town and par., E. co. Clare, 10 miles E. of Ennis - par., 24,383 ac., pop. 4436; town, pop. 758; P.O., T.O. Market-day, Thursday. On the hill of Tulla are the remains of an abbey.
