In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Lumby like this:
LUMBY, a hamlet in Sherburn parish, W. R. Yorkshire; on the North Midland railway, 5¼ miles NNE of Pontefract. Pop., 174.
