Sources:

  1. Data for the Metropolitan Boroughs of London for 1911 to 1920 were transcribed by Graham Mooney from the table titled "Causes of Death at different Periods of Life in Metropolitan Boroughs--1911", on pp.324-38 of the Sixty-Fourth Annual Report of the Registrar-General of Births, Deaths, and Marriages in England and Wales 1911., and similarly titled tabulations in later reports. The source tables break deaths down by gender and age group, as well as cause, but the transcription is limited to the overall totals for each cause. Graham Mooney's work was part of the Centre for Metropolitan History project 'Death in the Metropolis, 1860-1920'.
  2. Data for Municipal Boroughs, Urban Districts and Rural Districts in 1911 were computerised by the Centre for Data Digitisation and Analysis at the Queens University, Belfast, from the tabulation "Causes of Death in Administrative Areas, 1911", on pp.438-536 of the same 1911 Annual Report. This is a full transcription of the source table, which has separate columns for males and females but no breakdown by age, but does not include County Boroughs.
  3. Neither of the transcriptions include the notes at the foot of the tables.

Notes:

  1. The table held in this table are essentially an extension of the data held in 'cause_ew_reg_ann' from the 1850s to 1910, but for local government districts rather than Registration Districts. However, the lack of data for County Boroughs mean the data are of limited usefulness other than for London. Data for County Boroughs, in a format matching that for Metropolitan Boroughs, are included on pages 339-376 of the 1911 report. Given that these tables cross-tabulate cause by age, a full transcription would enable 1911 data to be added to the cause_age_ew_lgd table, which currently starts with 1921, and the 1911 report also includes totals for all UDs and MBs, and for all RDs, in each county, on pages 377-337.
  2. The data have been fully matched to the AUO, and the 1911 data have been compared with the 1911 LGD GIS. Only one 1911 polygon is missing data, for the part of Spalding RD in the Parts of Kesteven; most of this RD was in the Parts of Holland, and the missing part contained only one Civil Parish. Conversely, the table does include data for a number of districts which were abolished in or soon after 1911: Aston Manor MB (Warwickshire), Erdington UD (Warwickshire), Handsworth UD (Staffordshire), Kings Norton and Northfield UD (Worcestershire), and Yardley RD (Worcestershire), all of which were absorbed by Birmingham CB in November 1911; Castle Bromwich RD (Warwickshire), which was absorbed into Meriden RD in April 1912; and Caversham UD (Oxfordshire), which was absorbed into Reading CB in 1911.
  3. Whereas the categories of mortality used by the Registrar General varied during the nineteenth and early twentieth century (see documentation for cause_ew_reg_ann) and there were significant changes between 1910 and 1911, for the limited period of 1911 to 1920 covered by this table, causes of death were consistently recorded.
  4. This table was renamed from mort_acd_lgd to cause_ew_lgd_ann to more accurately reflect the content.

Checking:

  1. The original documentation for this table stated: "London data unknown; check with Graham Mooney. Data digitised by CDDA were checked by summing each cause of death (including 'All other causes' and comparing the figure with the total given for each district. It was not possible to check the 'Inquests' column and hence this was checked by sight."
  2. Unfortunately, CDDA did not include the overall total number of deaths when they built this table, so it is impossible to confirm the above check without new data entry. It would probably be better to do a full transcription of the county totals for all urban and all rural districts (see above), and use this as a cross-check.
  3. As part of work in 2020, index building showed there were two sets of rows for Havant UD in Hampshire (listed as "Southampton"), and checking against the GIS showed that Stowmarket UD in East Suffolk was missing. Checking against the original reports showed that all districts between these two had their labels offset (although it also showed that for all the Hampshire districts following Havant the causes did correctly sum to the reported total). This mis-labelling has been corrected.
  4. Visual inspection of the data also showed that the London data include 29 rows for most years, but for 1912 there is just one row, for the City of London, and for 1913 there are 28, missing the City of London. Further investigation revealed the rows labelled 1913 actually all relate to 1912 while all the 1913 rows were missing. The existing 1913 rows were altered to be 1912 in the loaded data file. The Male and Female rows for London boroughs and county totals in 1913 were entered as individual rows and added to the table in Summer 2022 by Paula Aucott to correct this problem. N.B. Other years containing only figures for London are total persons rather than by gender.
