By now, the Conservatives had been in power for eighteen years, and the upset Conservative win in 1992 meant that many people did not quite believe pollsters' predictions of a Labour victory. The actual result was Labour's greatest victory ever, and the Conservatives' worst defeat since 1906. One outcome was that the Conservatives lost all their seats in Wales and Scotland, and most of their seats in northern England. A significant factor in the election was allegations of "sleaze" against individual Conservative MPs. In the Tatton constituency, the journalist Martin Bell ran as an independent, with Labour and the Liberal Democrats not standing, and beat the sitting MP Neil Hamilton who had been accused of accepting "cash" for asking questions in Parliament.
