The Conservatives lost 42 seats relative to their massive victory in 1983, but still won a majority of 102. This victory made Margaret Thatcher the first Prime Minister to win three successive victories since the Earl of Liverpool (in office from 1812 to 1827). Labour had re-organised under Neil Kinnock, and this election arguably re-established them as a credible opposition. Conversely, the Liberal-SDP Alliance did not achieve a breakthrough, and one consequence was the merger of the two parties to form the Liberal Democrats.
