Thurles, market town, township, and par. with ry. sta., mid. co. Tipperary, on river Suir, 29 miles N. of Clonmel, 78 miles NE. of Cork, and 87 miles SW. of Dublin - par., 8268 ac., pop. 5778; township, 1274 ac., pop. 4850; P.O., T.O., 2 Banks, 1 newspaper. Market-days, Tuesday and Saturday. Thurles is situated in a rich and populous district. It contains the cathedral of the R. C. archbishopric of Cashel, and several convents and colleges. Thurles gives the title of viscount to the Marquis of Ormonde.
