Descriptive Gazetteer Entry for East Looe

East Looe, fishing port with ry. sta. (Looe), St Martin's par., E. Cornwall, on E. side of estuary of the Looe, 231 miles SW. of London, pop. 1353; P.O., T.O., called Looe, 1 Bank. East Looe was an important maritime town in the 14th century, and it has still, in addition to its pilchard fishery, some exports of copper and granite. A canal connects it with Liskeard, 9 miles N., and a line of rail with the mines; a bridge stretches across the estuary to West Looe. East Looe is an ancient incorporation; it was disfranchised in 1832.
