Notes:

Galway was one of eight Irish urban areas listed as not part of any barony in the county reports of the 1851 census, being named there as 'Borough of Galway. Lewis's Topographical Dictionary of Ireland (1837) says "In 1396, the town, which had hitherto exercised its corporate privileges only by prescription, obtained from Rich. II. a perpetual grant of the customs for the repair of the walls, and also a charter of incorporation, confering many privileges, which charter was confirmed in 1402, by Hen. IV. ... In 1484, a new charter was granted to the town, vesting its government in a mayor and bailiffs".
