Type: | New Town |
Identifier: | NEW_TOWN |
Description: | Although new towns have been created throughout history, this unit type covers the British units created under the New Towns Act of 1946, with designated areas within which development was promoted under a Development Corporation withspecial powers and central government funding. Most New Towns were set up primarily to receive 'overspill' population from the main cities, especially London. Note that, in most cases, Development Corporations were wound up once rapid expansion ended, but their assets were transferred to the Commission for New Towns and the designated area remained in existence. |
