In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Hatfield like this:
Hatfield (or Bishops Hatfield), market town and par. with ry. sta., on river Lea, in co. and 6 miles SW. of Hertford - par., 12,884 ac., pop. 4059; P.O., T.O., 1 Bank. Market-day, Thursday; in the vicinity is Hatfield House, the seat of the Marquis of Salisbury.
