In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Inishmaan like this:
Inishmaan.-- island (forming par.), the middle island of the Aran group, SW. co. Galway, 16 miles SW. of Spiddal, 2252 ac., pop. 473.
