In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Mallow like this:
Mallow.-- market town, par., and township with ry. sta. (Mallow Junction), N. co. Cork, on river Blackwater, 20 miles NW. of Cork and 144 SW. of Dublin-par., 8819 ac., pop. 6171; town and township, 379 ac., pop. 4439; 3 Banks. Market-days, Tuesday and Friday. Mallow carries on a good agricultural trade, and has an extensive tannery. ...
There are celebrated warm mineral springs, and many beautiful seats in the neighbourhood. There is good salmon fishing on the river, which is here crossed by a bridge of 15 arches. Mallow Castle, seat, is adjacent to the town. Mallow returned 1 member to Parliament until 1885.
