In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Skull like this:

Skull, par. and vil., co. Cork, on Skull Harbour, in Roaringwater Bay, 12 miles W. of Skibbereen - par., 37,922 ac., pop. 8090; vil., pop. 399; P.O., T.O., called Schull (or Scull). Market-day, Thursday. The copper mines in the neighbourhood have been abandoned.
