In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Curragh like this:

Curragh, * an extensive plain or common, and the principal racing-ground of Ireland, in mid. of co. and 2 miles E. of Kildare, and 32 miles SW. of Dublin; 6 miles long and 2 miles broad, 4885 ac.; is the property of the Crown, and forma an extensive sheep-walk. The races are held in April, June, September, and October. The Curragh Camp is one of the chief military encampments in Ireland, and the headquarters of the SE. military district; P.O., T.O. There is accommodation for 12,000 troops. The present encampment was established in 1855.
