In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Ballymena like this:

Ballyamena, market town, Kirkinriola par., mid. co. Antrim, on river Braid, 33 miles NW. of Berfast and 131 miles N. of Dublin by rail -- township, 469 ac., pop. 8883; 4 Banks, 1 newspaper. Market-days, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. It has extensive linen mfrs., important flax spinning, bleaching, and dye works; and iron ore is worked in the vicinity.
