In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Ballycastle like this:
Ballycastle.-- market town with ry. sta., Ramoan par., N. co. Antrim, on B. Bay, 15 miles N. of Barrymoney and 12 miles E. of the Giant's Causeway, Pop. 1446; P.O., T.O., 1 Bank. Market-days, Monday, Tuesday, and Saturday. It is beautifully situated on the coast, and in the vicinity are ruins of a castle built in 1609, and of Bonamargy Abbey. It has now little or no shipping trade.
