In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Newtown Stewart like this:

Newtown Stewart, market town with ry. sta., Ardstraw par., N. co. Tyrone, on river Mourne, 8 miles N. of Omagh, 35 miles SE. of Londonderry, and 152 miles N W. of Dublin, pop. 1079; P. O., T. O., 1 Bank. Market-day, Monday. Newtown Stewart derived its name from Sir William Stewart, to whom it was granted by Charles I.; it was burnt by James II. after the siege of Derry.
