In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Coal Island like this:

Coal Island, vil. with ry. sta. (Coalisland), 5 miles NE. of Dungannon, E. co. Tyrone, on a branch canal 4 miles to river Blackwater, pop. 677; P.O., T.O., called Coalisland. Market-day, Tuesday. Coal of an inferior quality is mined here.
