In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Arran like this:

Aran, insular bar., co. Galway, 11,287 ac., pop. 3163; P.O. It consists of a group of islands (often called South Aran), forming a chain of about 15 miles long across the mouth of Galway Bay. Nearly the whole area consists of the 3 islands, Aranmore or Inishmore, Inishmaan, and Inisheer, which are separately noticed.
