In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Balbriggan like this:

Balbriggan, township, market and seaport town, Balrothery par., in co. and 22 miles NNE. of Dublin by rail, 516 ac., pop. 2443; P.O., T.O., 1 Bank.Market-day, Monday. It carries on muslin embroidery and the weaving of calico and stockings (cotton), and is also a fashionable watering-place. It has light house on pier at S. side of entrance, with fixed light seen 10 miles.
