In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Buncrana like this:

Buncrana, small market town with ry. sta., Lower Fahan par., NE. co. Donegal, on Lough Swilly, 12 m. NW. of Londonderry, pop. 764; P.O., T.O., 1 Bank. Market-days, Tuesday and Friday. It is resorted to for sea-bathing, and has a valuable salmon fishery.
