In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Baltimore like this:

Baltimore, fishing vil., SW. co. Cork, on Baltimore Bay, 7 miles SW. of Skibbereen, pop. 146; P.O., T.O. The bay is formed by the estuary of the river Ilen.
