In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described New Ross like this:

New Ross (or Ross), market town, river port, and township, St Mary's par., W. co. Wexford, and Rosbercon par., SE. co. Kilkenny, on river Barrow (about 2 miles below its confluence with the river Nore), 5 miles SW. of Ballywilliam ry. sta., 15 miles NE. of Waterford, and 92 miles S. by W. ...


of Dublin, 505 ac., pop. 6670; P.O., T.O., 2 Banks, 2 newspapers. Market-days, Wednesday and Saturday. The Barrow is here crossed by an iron bridge (1869), with a portcullis for the navigation. Vessels of 200 tons can reach the quay at all times of the tide, and those of 800 tons at high tides. (For shipping statistics, see Appendix.) Large quantities of provisions and agricultural produce are exported. New Ross returned 1 member to Parliament until 1885.
