In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Lorrha like this:
Lorrha, par. and vil., N. co. Tipperary, on Lough Derg and river Shannon, 9 miles W. of Parsonstown - par., 15,679 ac., pop. 1567; vil., pop. 140; P.O.; has ruins of an abbey and 2 castles.
