In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Dalkey like this:

Dalkey, par., township, and vil. with ry. sta. and harb., in co. and 8 miles S.E. of Dublin, on the coast, 2 miles SE. of Kingstown -- par., 468 ac., pop. 2790; township, 592 ac., pop. 3234; P.O., T.O.; remarkable for the beauty and salubrity of its situation. Separated from the mainland by D. Sound is Dalkey Island (22 ac.), on which is a martello tower for the protection of the harbour.
