In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Kilrea like this:

Kilrea, town and par. with ry. sta., E. co. Londonderry, on river Bann, 18 miles S. of Coleraine - par., 6168 ac., pop. 2648; town, pop. 935; P.O., T.O., 1 Bank. Market-day, Wednesday. Considerable trade is carried on by means of the river, which is navigable for lighters from Belfast and Newry through Lough Neagh. The town stands on the property of the Mercers' Company, London.
