In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Celbridge like this:

Celbridge, vil. with ry. sta., Kildrought and Donaghcumper par., NE. co. Kildare, on river Liffey, 11 m. W. of Dublin, pop. 988; P.O., T.O. The vil. is 1½ m. N. of the ry. sta., which is called Hazelhatch and Celbridge. The seat of Celbridge Abbey, in the immediate neighbourhood, was a favourite retreat of Dean Swift.
