In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Hillsborough like this:

Hillsborough, small market town and par. with ry. sta., N. co. Down, on the Lagan Canal--par., 8493 ac., pop. 3397; town, pop. 797; P.O., T.O., 1 Bank. Marketday, Wednesday. Hillsborough is a neat little town, beautifully situated on the slope of a hill, and has some linen mfrs.; adjacent is Hillsborough Castle, seat of the Marquis of Downshire.
