In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Hacketstown like this:
Hacketstown, vil., co. Carlow, and par., partly also in co. Wicklow -- par., 11,617 ac., pop. 2500; vil., on river Derreen, 7 miles NW. of Tinahely sta., pop. 721; P.O. Market-day, Thursday. Hacketstown was twice attacked by the insurgents in 1798.
