In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Carrick on Suir like this:
Carrick-on-Suir, market town and township, Carrick par., SE. co. Tipperary, on river Suir, 12 miles E. of Clonmel, 14 miles NW. of Waterford, and 149 miles SW. of Dublin by rail -- township, 2200 ac., pop. 6583; 2 Banks. Market-day, Saturday. The town is connected by an ancient stone bridge with the suburb of Carrickbeg (co. ...
Waterford), on the opposite side of the river. The navigation of the river has been improved, and vessels of 150 tons can reach the quay. Agricultural produce is largely exported. The woollen mfr. has become unimportant. Carrick confers the title of Earl upon a branch of the Butler family.
