In 1837, Samuel Lewis's Topographical Dictionary of Ireland described Rathkennan like this:

RATHKENAN, a parish, in the barony of KILNEMANAGH, county of TIPPERARY, and province of MUNSTER, 4 ½ miles (S. W.) from Thurles; containing 235 inhabitants. It is a perpetual cure, in the diocese of Cashel, annexed to that of Holy Cross, and in the patronage of the Archbishop: the rectory is impropriate in Carew Hamilton, Esq. The tithes amount to £43. 12. 1.
