In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Gardenstown like this:

Gardenstown, fishing vil., Gamrie par., in co. and 8 miles E. of Banff, on Gamrie Bay, pop. 871; P.O., T.O., 1 Bank; was founded in 1720 by Alexander Garden of Troup.
