In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Dochart like this:
Dochart, river, Killin par., Perthshire; issues from Loch Dochart, and flows NE. along Glen Dochart to Loch Tay at Killin; is 13 miles long, and has good salmon and trout fishing. Loch Dochart lies at the head of the glen, 1 mile E. of Crianlarich sta., and contains an islet on which are the ruins of a castle of the Campbells of Lochawe.
