In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Leadhills like this:
Leadhills, vil., Crawford par., and quoad sacra par., partly also in Crawfordjohn par., Lanarkshire - par., pop. 1081; vil., 5 miles SW. of Elvanfoot sta., pop. 1023; P.O., T.O. Leadhills is situated about 1300 ft. above sea-level, and is the highest village in Scotland. It derives its name from the lead mines here, which have been worked with little interruption from the beginning of the 17th century. Allan Ramsay (1686-1758), the poet, was a native.
