In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Highgate like this:
Highgate.-- NW. suburb of London with ry. sta., St Pancras, Islington, and Hornsey pars., Middlesex, 5½ miles NW. of St Paul's, pop. 9457; is situated on a hill, near the Great Northern and Hampstead and City Junction Railways, and commands splendid views of the metropolis and the surrounding country.
