In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Uig like this:

Uig, par., in SW. of Lewis island, Outer Hebrides, Ross-shire, 135,471 ac., pop. 3489; contains also the islands of Bernera, Mealista, and Pabay; the church stands near the W. coast of Lewis, 34 miles W. of Storaoway.
