In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Lochs like this:

Lochs, par., Lewis island, Outer Hebrides, Ross-shire, 144,444 ac. (including foreshore and lochs), pop. 6284; the church is on the N. side of Loch Erisort, 11½ miles SW. of Stornoway.
