In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Verwood like this:

VERWOOD, or Fairwood, a chapelry in Cranborne parish, Dorset; on the Salisbury and Dorset railway, 4 miles SE of Cranborne. It has a post-office under Salisbury and a r. station. Pop., 685. The living is annexed to Cranborne.
