In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Smalls Lighthouse like this:
Smalls Lighthouse, on one of a rocky group of islands off coast of Pembrokeshire, 20 miles SW. of St Davids Head; is 141 ft. high, with fixed light (Smalls) 125 ft. above high water and seen 17 miles.
