NEWBIGGIN, a parish in East Ward district, Westmoreland; on Crowdundle burn, under Written Crag, 2 miles N W of Temple-Sowerby r. station, and 6¾ . N W by N of Appleby. Post-town, Temple-Sowerby, under Penrith. Acres, 1, 184. Real property, with Milburn, £3, 603. Pop., 107. Houses, 25. The manor was given by Gamel the Dane, to the Newbiggens; and belongs now to W. Crackenthorpe, Esq. Newbiggen Hall is a castellated mansion, and was built in 1533by one of the Crackenthorpes. The Written Crag takesits name from ancient inscriptions on it, said to have been in Latin, and now effaced. Gypsum is found. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Carlisle.
