Descriptive Gazetteer Entry for Radcliffe

Radcliffe.-- manufacturing town and par. (ry. stations Radcliffe and Radcliffe Bridge), SE. Lancashire, on river Irwell, 3 miles SW. of Bury and 8 NW. of Manchester by rail, 2533 ac., pop 16,267; P.O., T.O., 2 Banks. Radcliffe has cotton spinning, gingham and fustian weaving, paper making, and coal mining. Among the public buildings are a market hall (1852), presented to the town by the Earl of Wilton, and a co-operative hall with store rooms, library, and assembly room, which was erected in 1878.
