Philipstown.-- market town, E. King's co., on Philipstown rivulet and on Grand Canal, 8 m. E. of Tullamore and 12 miles SW. of Edenderry, pop. 829; P.O., T.O., called Phillipstown. Market-day, Thursday. Philipstown was so named in honour of Philip II. of Spain, the consort of Queen Mary of England, and was designed to be the counterpart of Maryborough in Queen's co.
