Descriptive Gazetteer Entry for Ormskirk

Ormskirk, market town, par., and township with ry. sta. SW. Lancashire, 12 miles NE. of Liverpool and 209 from London - par., 30,909 ac., pop. 23,310; town and township, 573 ac., pop. 6651; P.O., T.O., 4 Banks, 1 newspaper. Market-day, Thursday. Tradition has it that Ormskirk is an ancient place, although its name does not appear in Domesday Book. It is agreeably situated, with sufficient elevation to admit of fine views being obtained of the surrounding country. Cordage mfrs. form the leading trade, but there are also brewing and ironfounding. Market gardens are numerous in the neighbourhood, their produce of carrots and early potatoes being especially prized.
