In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Lynton like this:

Lynton, watering-place and par., Devon, at mouth of river Lyn, 12 miles NE. of Ilfracombe., 7193 ac., pop. 1213; P.O., T.O., 1 newspaper; is situated amidst fine scenery, and is a resort of tourists and sea-bathers.
