In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Abbey like this:
Abbey.-- or Corcomroe Abbey, par., N. co. Clare, 2 miles S. of Burren and 11 miles NW. of Gort ry. sta., 4714 ac., pop. 663; contains the fine ruins of a Cistercian abbey (12th century).
