In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Kilmore like this:

Kilmore, par., and seat of a diocese, in co. and 4 miles SW. of Cavan - par., 14,929 ac., pop. 3590; the diocese of Kilmore is now joined with Elphm and Ardagh. The cathedral and the bishop's palace are at Kilmore.
